This is going to be an always work in progress document.Here I would like to list out some of my silly but not dangerous habits.

So here goes the list....

I always read news paper in the reverse direction.From last page to first page.
Always practice Yoga at the same place in the yoga room
Always calculate time it takes to reach a place and then start no matter how important the trip is for me.
Always keep hands below my Head while sleeping.
As if I am so busy and expecting an important email, I would be checking my emails.
When I have work to complete, I always want to have my private work space so that no body will come and disturb me.
Even though I have ample time to book a train ticket for a journey I know I should, I will never book the tickets in advance and later take a bus or some other alternative...

Every thing happens for a reason

As the year is about to end, thinking of what happened this year, I strongly agree that every thing happens for a reason.

First I never wanted to leave Vizag and come to Bangalore for work.I was sent by my old company for 3 month assignment, which extended to 8 months and I didn't like the job.I searched for alternative and landed my self as an employee with one of the best company in the world.It changed my life forever.

This year, slowly I started reading books.Yes!!!Guess its a difficult habit to develop who had never interest in reading.But there are different variety of books on different subjects that you can find.So I found what I like.I liked these personal development and motivational books.Looks like I need them and God is making me to read those books.Some good books I completed are

Seven habits of Highly effective people.

All are superb excellent books which have a very high potential to make you move up the ladder in your career or in your business.Lets see what I will make out in my life after reading those books.I can readily say, I see there is lot of change in me after reading these books.

Last month I attended a training titled IQ 2 EQ.I was asked by my manager to attend that workshop, yes workshop would be more appropriate to call.After attending that workshop, i learned a lot.I quickly applied them in my personal life and I succeeded.Not that we don't know those simple things that we learn in behavioral trainings, we need some refreshers to shake our brain and let the best ideas flow.If my manger has not asked me to attend that workshop, I wouldnt have got what i wanted very badly from more than an year.

Every thing happens for a cause.We just need to get the best out of it.

From the past one month I have been observing this.I open netbeans, start working on it and at some point of time, either one min or 5 mins or 10 mins, netbeans crashes

I am using Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0-b147),Ubuntu 11.04 and Netbeans 6.9.1.

I tried different things and I observed that everytime I am about the checkin some files to CVS it is crashing more frequently.For a changed I modified netbeans/etc/netbeans-conf file to use JDK6 update 28 and I kind of not seeing this issue again.Will update the blog if I see , still netbeans crashes.

Ubuntu 11.10 Google chrome unable to access internet

I switched to Ubuntu 11.10 after reading lot of good feeling features from the release.Once I updated to the new OS, there started the problems.

First the system wide proxy settings wont work and to the worst , can't access internet through Google Chrome browser.

After searching in the internet , through a bug report from Google chrome , came to this posting.

This atleast solved my problem for now.And I am now back blogging using my chrome browser.Here are the steps who dont want to click on another link:

1. Install the gconf-editor package.
2. Start the gconf-editor program in gnome-terminal.
3. Go to the system -> proxy tab and set the proxy you want there.
Make sure you set the mode value from ‘none’ to manual , and for example if you want to set a socks5 proxy set the socks_host and socks_port values.

Vizag going Green

From past couple of days, there is significant move from all section of people of Visakhapatnam to make Vizag, Clean and Green city.Some I could remember are

A very good initiative by Commisioner of Greater Municipal Corporation (GVMC) asking his employees to come to office by cycle.He just didn't ask but he already started doing himself.
An another initiative is creating cycling track in beach road.
Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forests visiting the city and deciding to plant as many as 40 Lakh trees in the city which will launched by the honorable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
Civil Societies also coming up with the same initiative to plant more trees.
BRTS (Bus Rapid Transport System) work to create a good and fast bus transport across important corridors of the city which will promote community transport as well as reduce traffic
Talks are on to start a Metro project to the port city.

Fact: An acre of trees can remove roughly about 13 tons of dust and gases every year from the surrounding environment!

If every thing goes well, in coming years, Vizag will still become more beautiful than it is.

Formatting path variables in ant

This is a small tip to format the path variables in to a readable format.This can be done using path convert task.
Say we have path element declared like this:

<fileset dir="${as.home}/modules" includes="*.jar"/>
<fileset dir="${japex.home}/lib" includes="*.jar"/>
</path>

To debug or display the path , usually we do it by setting a property like this :
<property name="as.cp" refid="as-classpath"/>
and then echoing the property value.This in most cases becomes ugly and unreadable.
So to get a formatted output, all you need is to use pathconvert task.Read more about pathconvert task here

Now output would be like this printed in a separate line:

India Moving to Interesting times

With the powerful Right To Information bill passed a few years ago and the advent of several 24/7 news channels, cheap telecommunications and internet facility made available, a lot of burning issues and problems faced by common men of the Country are being brought to the knowledge of authorities so that they can be solved or people can start a bit of agitation if it is a community issue in case the concerned department is not acting.In many cases, the television channels have started questioning the authorities on behalf of the people of the country .

This was not the case a decade ago.People have to wait for the national news bulletin broadcasted in the state owned Doordarshan channel or people have to wait for the morning news paper.The state owned media could never ask a question to their bossed.There was no way people can interact with the authorities or question them.

The technology helped a lot in the way the functioning of Government bodies.Various Government organisations act more responsibly when some news is broadcasted in television or some one asks for information using RTI act.

RTI act has given tremendous power to the citizens of India.Earlier when they were not able to get the work done by various Govt departments, people have to bribe the officers to get their work done.If they don't bribe, they have to visit the office for several days and finally approach brokers or then bribe the officers.Now it is not the case.People are now seeking information through RTI act, though in most cases the RTI applications are not accepted and as a token of gratitude, the officers are doing the work for them very fastly.The work which was done earlier only after giving bribe can be now get done by simply saying I want to file an RTI application.In one of the surveys made by some NGO, now filing RTI application is as effective as giving bribe

Also I have to mention, the recent agitation of Shri Anna Hazarre and his team , one more powerful act, the Lokpal is going to become a law which gives more power to common man and stop corruption.Already Lokayukta which is some what equivalent of Lokpal at State Government , has proved that even a powerful elected representatives like the Chief Minister of Karnataka and Cabinet ministers like Gali Janardhan Reddy are behind the bars now.

The information accessed through RTI has helped in filing Public Interest Litigations in Courts and get powerful people in the central Government to be arrested.The courts are also become strict (I don't think any laws have changed recently), but now the so called powerful elected representatives who are in jail are not even getting bails.

The Information technology, the telecommunications, the Internet, the 24/7 news channels and RTI act together are making wonders.Otherwise India might not be progressing so well.Clearly I can say India is moving in right direction and is ready to become a super power in coming days.

Order of ANT Targets Invocation

First , here I am not trying to post any solution.I want to implement this idea when I have free time or find a solution for it.Right now I don't care if it is stupid, or it already exists.If any one did this already or knows a solution, please tell me.If I find the solution myself what I want in near future, I will update this blog.Now lets proceed to the actual post.

While working with huge complex ant scripts spanning across multiple files,I would like to get a call hierarchy instead of the actual invocations to understand the flow.Effectively, I would like to get each and every target that is going to be invoked in the sequence if we give an ant script and the target we plan to execute.The goal is to make it easy to understand what an ant script does.

Say I have a build file and want to execute default build target, I would like to see the output some thing more or less like this:

Actually eclipse does it a partially when we open an ant file in the ant editor, we can see in the outline window from which file the target is imported from.

Update:

What I want here can be done using the listeners and loggers available in ant.I still didnt get time to write my own logger.For more information refer to loggers and listeners section in ant manual and in ant 1.7.1, we have some really interesting loggers built in to the system

Netbeans handling ant scripts

I had this problem today.I created a java project in Netbeans.The version I am using is

NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 (Build 201107282000)

I had to create or copy another ant script from a guide.There are two ways I can do this..

Create a empty ant script and copy the contents to this file.
Other one , copy the file to the current directory.

The problem with second approach is , looks like netbeans is not recognizing the file as ant build script by default and it doesn't solve the purpose.I remember eclipse doing it nicely.So I have to go with the first approach.Hope Netbeans team will take care of it in future versions.

Please correct me if I am wrong ...Comments are welcome.

echoing ant classpath

This is not a big deal to blog about, but even experienced people will also get trapped to it easily
Say you have a path declared like this:

<path id="as.classpath">
<pathelement location="${java.home}/../lib/tools.jar"/>
<fileset dir="${as.home}/modules" includes="*.jar"/>
<fileset dir="${japex.home}/lib" includes="*.jar"/>
</path>

You want to display the contents for debugging.Usual mistake we tend to do is :
<echo message="${as.classpath}" /> and once the ant build script is executed, we wont see anything apart from the same string "{as.classpath}".

The solution is to set a property like this referring the path and then echo it.
<property name="as.cp" refid="as.classpath"/>.

There is also a way to nicely format the classpath in individual lines in the way you want.Will blog about it next time.

a milestone

Every one has a dream to construct or buy a house in their life.After 9 months of demolishing my old family building, where I am born,grew up and stayed for 29 years, today I got an appointment from an architect to visit the site and get a plan to construct a new house..Happy :-)

Forgot to mention, two of my classmates in school , are getting married today..Not one to other.. separately, both are guys LOL :-)

learning to write java based micro benchmarks

This week to-do is to learn japex and understand the existing tests written by some one long back and see if I have to write some thing new.As always writing software code on our own is comfortable than understanding some one else written code and maintaining it.

Hope I will understand what the current code is doing and I will try to come up with my own blog with my understanding of java based micro bench marking using japex. And as always, I already started fighting with ant scripts scratching my head why some thing is broken.Watch this space, if I come with some blog about japex

Usually I have the bad habit of working on many things basing on priorities and some times my interests.If I could work on all the things , my brain wants me to do, I would have already become as famous as Bill Gates or James Gosling...Only God and Time can say if I will complete what I want to do at the moment..LOL...

Better Doctor than Software Engineer.. :-(

I wanted to become a doctor and some times I wanted to become a Civil Servant and my Dad really never believed I could do it in spite of my good marks in Science and Maths in school.Finally once I completed my +2 and wanted to go to engineering college to pursue Engineering,I didn't get a good rank and couldn't get a seat locally.

So I joined BCA and did my masters in Information Systems.Then I got a job in small company in Vizag, worked there happily for 3 years and then joined one of the best IT companies in the world and my dream company.That is where still I am working happily.Good money,Good colleagues and Good bosses.Yes already I worked under 4 different bosses.

This software job is just like Doctor's job.Rule 1.Always update yourself.Doctors have to treat new diseases, but still can manage with out updating, since most diseases are old enough that they knew how to treat.But in this Job, I have to constantly learn new things every 6 months , work on them and some thing new comes again.Its challenging,but what is this life?Who wants challenge always.Even a machine needs some maintenance and rest.

Now I don't even know what all I knew.I only created my resume twice once after my Masters to get a break in my career and again only once after that to get the current job I am doing from last 4 years.I just felt I should always update my resume whether I am looking for a job or not.Next to do in my list.

The bad part in this entire story is, my life is not under my control, not even by Government of my Country.Since most revenue comes from US, the strings of my life are pulled by some one in US or some one who wants to destroy US.Todays news paper had a news, the Prime Minister of India saying, India must stand on it's legs.Mr PM, please do some thing to improve the condition of our category of people by creating a better IT policy.... What a life.....

Demand for separate state of Telangana

Now a days there is lot of news about Telangana.People are agitating.They want separate state.Govt is not functioning in that region at all.In my opinion there is no good reason for demanding a separate State and I think the moment is all about few politicians who want some power.

They argue, as united AndhraPradesh, that part of state is not developed.But in my opinion no part of the country is developed.North East part of India doesn't even have proper road and rail links, forget about air links.If a region wants separate state, a separate state may demand for separate country.

India is in this stage only due to individuals and not because of Government.Individuals are working hard, building industries and naturally India is growing.These Governments instead of setting up new industries, encouraging cultivation , they are dis-investing from the companies and forcefully grabbing poor farmers lands in the name of SEZ's.Situations became so worst that even most fertile soil is notified as barren and useless land. At least the courts in India are doing their job, else India would sit besides the African countries where there is absolutely no Governance.

In these 60+ years of Independence, how many children are getting proper food, how many people are getting health, how many children are getting education.Even in state capitals and big cities, in spite of collecting huge taxes of all kinds (if some one really sees the list of taxes we pay, they will say WTF), where are the roads, where are hospitals, where is drinking water, where are the schools?Are the current schools and hospitals sufficient for the population.

People suffer because of bad roads and bad drainage's.But if a Chief Minister or Prime Ministers visits that area, immediately roads are laid and drainage's are cleaned.What non sense is this? Who are paying taxes? Who are living in that city?Why should they give such an importance to a VIP who stays for a few minutes and leave the citizens to suffer all those years

Nothing will change for ever till people come out and ask.Lets see how the Central Government will resolve the issue of Telangana.

A fresh start

Today I want to start active blogging .This has happened in the past as well...but I never continued...
This blog will be a mix of my emotions, my feelings and some times related to my work or want to talk about technologies that interest me.This interest came back again because I am bored of being alone or because I am not seeing people around to express my feelings.

I don't guarantee , the blogs contain accurate information or views that are accepted universally.This is my blog.I write what I feel which some may like , some may not , some may agree and some may not.

I would take utmost care to make sure I present correct and best information in all my blogs which discuss about technologies and information.Other blog posts where I express the feelings of my heart, they just come out of my heart and I will take care so as they wont hurt feelings of anyone.

Also I have to mention, these views here reflect my own thoughts and feelings and should not be taken as official information from what ever company I work.
